On Wednesday 11th April, South had two Korfball teams participating in the first Korfball Canterbury Year 7 & 8 tournament for 2018. Being the defending champions, there was a lot of pressure heading into the tournament.
The South 1 team, consisting of talented and experienced Korf Ball veterans (year 8’s), played very well and went through pool play undefeated, with only a 0-0 draw against eventual winners Queenspark, being the only downside to a stella series of matches. As the 2nd qualifier we matched up against a very strong and formidable Middleton Grange team in the semi final. Unfortunately, we struggled taking the lid off the basket and it wasn’t to be - going down narrowly 2-1.
We had the opportunity to redeem ourselves in the 3rd/4th playoff which we did so convincingly. All members of the team showcased wonderful skills and abilities to defeat a strong St Martins team 5-1.
Our Tournament team comprised a large number of year 7 students - many of whom had never played Korf Ball before. However, all members stepped up and embraced the challenge we were faced with. Unfortunately a slow start meant that we missed out on the top 4 qualifiers, however in our playoff matchup we proved our potential by playing an exciting and expansive style of Korf Ball.
A huge congratulations to Indi Beeforth and Livvy Crowe who impressed not only the spectators, but also the Korfball Canterbury selectors, making it into the Tournament team which comprised of 4 boys and 4 girls.
A second massive congratulations to Blake Rosanowski, Indi Beeforth, Louis Hamilton, Esther Pratten and Livvy Crowe for being invited to join the 2018 Canterbury Junior Korf Ball Squad.
Looking forward to hopefully reclaiming the trophy in the next tournament - watch this space!
