The official Korfball season was kicked off on Monday 1st April with an 18 team tournament held outdoors at Elmwood Park. Christchurch South was well represented with 2 teams and achieved some very pleasing results.
The Christchurch South B team consisted of a mixture of year 7 and year 8 students, many of whom had never played Korfball before. This team had a very tricky
first up assignment, facing off against a very tall and talented St Martins team. Unfourtunalty our guys came up short and were defeated. A lesser side would have dropped their heads and given up, however, the players involved showed some great grit and determination and fought back in pool play, not dropping another game. It was awesome to see some of our young new players stepping up and showing some excellent skills. We finished 5th overall, which is very pleasing considering so many of these players were playing Korfball for the very first time.
The Christchurch South A team was full of year 8's who displayed excellent poise, composure and skill. The A team dominated pool play, only conceding 1 goal throughout the opening rounds. In a tight semi-final, we defeat a strong Queenspark team (3-0) to advance to the final where we would face off against the same St Martins teams that defeated our B team. Unfortunately, it was not to be, eventually falling 1-0 in a very enthralling match that drew a large crowd.
The tournament was a massive success to all involved. To achieve 2nd and 5th overall out of 18 teams despite only having one full training session is a remarkable result. A huge congratulations to all students who attended the term one tournament and also to Sophie Yarham, Angus Sevier and Sam Higgins who were named by Korfball Canterbury in the team of the tournament.
